Lake Victoria (Kenya)

Lake Victoria (Kenya)

Lake Victoria is famous as the world's largest tropical lake and the world's second largest freshwater lake. Covering a total of 69,000 square kilometres, it lies in the Rift Valley of East Africa. Although better known for the wildlife that roam the savannah plains, its most diverse and endangered eco systems are found under its waters.

Due to the lake's and river's importance to the continent's water supply, Lake Victoria is often referred to as "The Heart of Africa".

The towns of Bukoba, Musoma and Mwanza themselves have a number of attractions. Near Mwanza and Musoma are many islands, some of which have become beautiful wildlife sanctuaries.

Birdwatching and fishing trips are popular excursions, and boat trips or hikes can also be arranged around Lake Victoria.
