Songimvelo Game Reserve

Description

Songimvelo Game Reserve extends over 50 000 hectares of land and is situated in the Barberton Mountains of Mpumalanga. The landscape encompasses pristine grassland, wide open land, deep valleys and breathtaking forest ravines.

Songimvelo is popular with scientists around the world due to its 3.5 billion year old volcanic rocks, typically known as the Barberton Greenstone. These rocks have been so well preserved that their fossils faithfully record the earliest life forms on the planet as well as evidence of the first recorded massive meteorite impact.

Unlike other game reserves, Songimvelo is unique in its game viewing approach as it offers horseback safaris in addition to 4x4 safari trips. You can expect to see anything from elephant and white rhino, to zebra, buffalo and wildebeest.

Birdwatchers are guaranteed to see an extraordinary variety of bird species around the Komati River that runs through the reserve and into Swaziland. Around 300 bird species have been recorded in the park, including olive bush shrike and grey sunbird. There are also designated bush-walk routes which guests are allowed to explore with a guide.

Songimvelo truly is a gem of the Mpumalanga lowveld and pefect for a day visit or an overnight stay. Remember to bring binoculars, sunscreen and a good pair of shoes!
