About Makhaya Guest House

No matter whether you are in Johannesburg on business or as a foreign tourist seeking a unique African experience you are a valued guest and, as such, a very special individual. The house stands on a large property and set far back in its spacious gardens. Two private garages and a large courtyard provide secure parking for guests and their visitors. Islands of further gardens flank other areas. High walls provide privacy and buffer the already-minimal street noise. Tranquillity is the order of the day.

The interior is warmly inviting, with objects d'art drawn from all over Africa and especially the magnificent carvings and wooden sculpture of West African countries. In most languages of sub-Saharan Africa, Ma'Khaya means our home and more than that. The saying goes that An Englishman's home is his castle.

In traditional African societies this goes further and extends to an enormous family that may comprise simply persons of similar surname or belonging to the same area. The house may be built of wattle-and-daub/Adobe or sun-baked brick even Pharaoh's palaces, woven reeds or saplings but modern architects have noted the ergonomic sense that they make.

I called Makhaya Guesthouse at 18:00 on saturday evening to confirm that we would be arriving between 7:30 & 8:00 . The night duty reception, Sam confirmed that this was ok. On arrival Sam said there was a problem with their system and they had booked our room to someone else. Note that we had reserved the Honeymoon Suite. He tried to put us in an inferoir room to which we disagreed as this was not what we wanted. We were forced to find alternative accommodation as it was more than two hours to drive home. I demanded to speak with the owner but their phones were turned off. We are extremely...

When I stayed at the Makhaya Guesthouse for almost one week I felt very much welcomed. Every request at any time was being attended immediately and very friendly. Everyone was always helpful. The food was very tasty and made with love. Excellent pizzas, sandwiches and a superb dinner - thanks to the chef! Wonderful breakfast - the omelet with avocado is particularly recommendable.Whenever I needed someone to drive me somewhere either someone of the house was available or a driver who had also a very good knowledge. The rooms are well equipped with everything you need. When my colleague arrived,...

Great friendly staff which make the stay enjoyable. Rooms are clean; breakfast is tasty and great African atmosphere. The quaint little bar was a nice addition.
